14+ Trendy Western Hairstyles You Can’t Get Around Right Now

Western hairstyles always have this really fun charm that I keep coming back to. They feel a little undone, a little playful, and just way more interesting than doing your hair the same way every time. I love that they can lean soft and pretty or a little more bold depending on how you style them, but they still feel easy and wearable instead of too much.

Lately, I have been so into looks that feel effortless but still special, and western hairstyles do that so well. Think loose waves, braids, bandanas, ribbons, hats, and those little details that make everything feel more styled without looking overthought. If you want hair ideas that feel cute, easy, and actually fun to wear, I pulled together 14+ western hairstyles you really need to see.

Classic cowboy waves

Okay please look at this first one. I think it is so crazy how a simple loose wave can instantly make you look so incredibly cool and effortless. You literally cannot start building this aesthetic without mastering the flat iron wave. You just kind of bend the hair back and forth instead of wrapping it. It just gives off this very cool vibe that says you prioritize having fun above literally everything else.

Rugged textured layers

You have to get the layers right when you wear this style. Because thick hair can get so heavy, styling it with super rugged, choppy layers just balances the entire silhouette so perfectly. You just throw in some sea salt spray and you look like you belong on a ranch. I am totally booking a salon appointment just to recreate this exact cut.

Dusty trail shag cut

This is exactly the energy I am trying to bring to my life this year. Taking totally boring, straight hair and making it look edgy is my ultimate goal. The contrast between a pretty face and a really choppy, gritty shag cut is just genius styling.

I actually have to tell you guys about a massive hair fail I had recently while trying to achieve this exact look. Last Tuesday night, I was watching hair cutting tutorials on TikTok at like 2 AM. You already know where this is going. I took my mom’s cheap kitchen scissors and decided I was going to cut my own curtain bangs and choppy layers to get that dusty trail vibe. I wet my hair, sectioned it off, and just started hacking away. Well, I sneezed right when I was cutting the left side of my bangs. I totally chopped a huge chunk of hair off right at the root! I had to walk around for a week with my hair pinned back looking like a complete disaster. It was so humiliating, honestly. I went back home to the reservation that weekend, and my auntie took one look at me and just started dying laughing. She had to sit me down in a kitchen chair and fix the whole thing for me. From that exact moment, I vowed to stop torturing my own hair and leave the scissors to the professionals.

Laid-back rancher curls

I was always so scared of brushing out my curls because I thought they would just turn into a massive frizz ball. But leaving the ends straight and just brushing out the middle creates such a clever, laid-back look. It grounds the outfit and keeps you from looking too overly done up. You guys have to try this the next time you go out for a casual weekend brunch.

Sun-kissed messy fringe

If there is one thing you take away from this entire blog post, please let it be this. A messy fringe is literally just elevated styling. You can be wearing the oldest, most faded flannel shirt you own, but if you have these cute sun-kissed bangs framing your face, you look totally intentional and gorgeous.

Frontier-inspired long layers

For my girls with super long hair, this is the exact vibe you need. A long layered cut paired with some natural texture is just flawless. It is so easy to just throw on a hat over this and run out the door.

Casual bandana updo

The bandana is back and I am so here for it.

Wild west tousled hair

This is my absolute favorite way to style anything remotely boring. You just take your natural hair and literally mess it up with texturizing powder. The tousled pieces just complete that wild, untamed aesthetic perfectly.

Speaking of untamed hair, I have to talk about how my family handles hair back home. In our culture, hair is super important and we usually keep it really long and take amazing care of it. But when there is a big family cookout or a powwow, it gets so incredibly hot outside. I used to try to keep my hair down to look pretty for pictures. I would be sweating so bad, and the wind would blow my hair straight into my plate of food. Literally eating my own hair along with my frybread, haha.

Rustic low ponytail

A low ponytail is literally everywhere right now. Pulling some face-framing pieces out so they can peek out around your face is such a good look. I spend hours scrolling online trying to find the perfect leather hair ties to pull this off properly.

Desert wind swept style

This takes the whole aesthetic and makes it perfect for a slightly nicer daytime event. A wind swept style gives off very romantic, bohemian energy and I am totally obsessed with it. You just add some turquoise jewelry and you look totally expensive.

Relaxed mid-length chop

I love a good mid-length cut. It is just the most comfortable way to still look fashionable without using any brain power to style it.

Country-inspired soft mullet

We are totally embracing the soft mullet aesthetic this year. Choppy short pieces on top, and longer length in the back. It screams confidence and edge. I want to look like I spend my weekends riding horses instead of watching Netflix on my couch, haha.

Rough cut taper fade

This is so cool and edgy! For the girls who like shorter hair or even for looking at men’s styling, a rough cut fade is already a great look, but adding some texture on top just takes it to that next level of earthy fashion.

Vintage outlaw slick back

I am a huge fan of this slightly moody, unbothered vibe. A slicked back look is perfect for those days when your hair is slightly dirty and you just cannot be bothered to wash it. It makes you look like a cool vintage outlaw from a movie.
