Homecoming hairstyles are one of my favorite parts of getting ready because they can change the whole feel of your look so fast. I always think the prettiest styles are the ones that still feel like you – just a little more polished, a little more special, and a little more thought-out. That is why I never really love anything that feels too stiff or overdone. I want something soft, pretty, and easy enough to actually feel comfortable wearing all night.
Lately, I have been way more into hairstyles that feel effortless but still really put-together, and homecoming hair can be such a fun way to play with that.
Elegant curled updo
Okay please look at this first one. I think it is so crazy how a few pinned-up curls can instantly make you look so wealthy and put together. You literally cannot go wrong with a classic updo. I love how the pieces are pulled out loosely around the face here. It just gives off this very soft, effortless vibe that says you did not spend five hours in a salon chair, even though we all know this probably took forever to perfectly pin into place. You definitely need to try this if you have a dress with a really pretty, detailed back that you want to show off.
Soft glam waves
This is my absolute favorite way to wear hair down. It is just so touchable and gorgeous. You look completely put together but still super relaxed and cool.
Sleek high ponytail
I have to admit, I am totally intimidated by the sleek high pony. It looks so fierce and model-esque, right? You just brush all your hair back, secure it super tight, and suddenly you have an instant face lift. I tried to do this last weekend for a night out, and I used so much hair gel that my head was literally shiny like a bowling ball. It was a complete disaster! I had to wash it all out and start over from scratch. But when it is done right, like in this picture, it is just unmatched power energy. I feel like you could wear this and completely command any room you walk into.
Romantic braided bun
This look is so incredibly sweet. Braids just add that perfect amount of texture to an updo so it does not look too stiff or severe. I am totally saving this one for my cousin because it looks so youthful but still really elegant and beautiful for a formal night out.
I actually have to tell you guys about my own high school dance disaster. My hair is super thick and heavy, typical Native hair, right? Well, my sophomore year, I was determined to have these tight, bouncy ringlet curls. I bought this cheap set of hot rollers from the drugstore and put them in my hair hours before the dance. I left them in for so long that my scalp was literally sweating. When I finally took them out, my hair did not have beautiful ringlets. It just puffed out horizontally like a giant triangle! I looked like a bizarre mushroom. My mom tried to fix it with a flat iron, but we just ran out of time. I had to go to the dance with triangle hair and pretend it was high fashion. It was so humiliating haha! So yeah, I am very cautious about heat styling now.
Classic Hollywood waves
If you are looking for formal hairstyles for long hair, this is exactly what you need. It is timeless and gives you that beautiful old money glamour that everyone is obsessed with right now.
Half-up twisted curls
This is giving me major inspiration for picture day hairstyles back in the day, but totally elevated for 2026. The half-up look is just the best of both worlds. You get the volume and length of wearing your hair down, but the front pieces are pulled away from your face so you can actually eat your dinner without eating your hair. I am totally obsessed with the little twists in the back, it adds such a nice focal point.
Voluminous blowout style
Okay, we really need to talk about the sheer power of a good blowout. A round brush and a hairdryer can literally change your life and your entire mood for the day.
Speaking of hair changing your life, I have to share this funny story about a family gathering back in Oklahoma. We were having this huge dinner, and my auntie insisted on braiding my hair for me. She always says I leave it too messy and wild. She braided it so incredibly tight that my eyes were literally pulled back into a permanent squint. I had a headache for three days straight! I tried to gently loosen it when she wasn’t looking, but she sprayed it with this industrial-strength hairspray that basically turned my head into a solid helmet. I walked around the whole weekend looking permanently surprised because my eyebrows were pulled up so high. You just have to laugh at those family moments, right? But honestly, a nice loose blowout like this picture is much more my speed nowadays. I prefer to actually feel my scalp.
Low chignon with tendrils
Sometimes less is more. This low bun is so incredibly chic and understated. I would totally wear this to a formal wedding or a nice dinner date.
Side-swept wavy look
I am totally in love with this dramatic side part. Sweeping all your hair over one shoulder just screams red carpet ready. It is honestly one of the best one shoulder dress hairstyles because it balances out the asymmetry of the neckline perfectly.
Textured messy bun
The messy bun is my ultimate safe space in life. But making a messy bun look intentional for a formal event is actually a science that takes years to master.
I tried to do a “fancy” messy bun for a date last month. I was running super late, so I just twisted my hair up in the car using the rearview mirror. I thought I nailed it, honestly. I walked into the restaurant feeling so confident, but when I went to the restroom halfway through dinner, I realized I had a massive, weird loop of hair sticking straight out of the side of my head like a little teacup handle! My date didn’t even say anything to warn me! I was so incredibly embarrassed.
Polished straight hair look
You can never ever go wrong with perfectly straight, glossy hair. It just looks so healthy and expensive. You just need a really good straightener and some shine serum.
Braided crown style
This is giving me major fairy princess energy and I am totally here for it. A braided crown is such a beautiful way to keep your hair up while still looking really intricate and detailed. It definitely takes some practice to get the braid to lay flat across your head, but the payoff is so worth the arm cramp. I feel like you could wear this and just instantly feel like royalty walking into a room.
Loose curls with hair accessories
Accessories are the ultimate cheat code for a good hair day! You just take a basic curled look, add some sparkly pins or a pretty pearl comb, and suddenly you look like you hired a professional stylist.
Chic low ponytail with volume
This is the definitive go-to style when you want to look classy but also want to dance all night without your hair sticking to your neck. You just tease the crown a little bit for that volume and tie it low. It is totally flawless and stays in place for hours.
