Taking the Plunge: Why We Are Chopping It All Off This Season
Okay girl, let’s talk hair. Specifically, that wild urge we all get at two in the morning to just chop it all off in the bathroom mirror. I have been scrolling endlessly looking at short pixie haircuts lately. Honestly, my long hair has been driving me totally crazy.
It is so heavy, it takes hours to dry, and it just gets everywhere. Last week I literally shut my hair in my car door while holding an iced coffee. That was my actual final straw.
So I decided to do a deep dive into the world of the pixie cut for my fashion blog. You know I love a good dramatic change. Plus it takes like zero time to wash and style. I feel like everyone needs to try short hair at least once in their twenties because it is just so freeing.
Classic short pixie cut
This is the holy grail. The classic chop that just never goes out of style. Whenever I see a girl walking down the street with a perfectly shaped classic cut, I immediately think she has her entire life together. It takes so much confidence to rock this because you literally cannot hide your face behind your hair anymore. Your bone structure is just front and center for the whole world to see.
I feel like you would look so incredibly good with this style. It just screams elegance but in a very cool, effortless way. You can pair it with some huge statement earrings and a simple black turtleneck and look like you belong in a French movie. It is just clean and timeless.
Textured pixie haircut
Texture is everything when it comes to short hair. A textured pixie haircut gives you that piece-y, lived-in look that is so popular right now. You literally just wake up, rub some styling wax between your hands, and mess it up a bit. It is the ultimate cool-girl aesthetic.
Me and my sister actually tried to do a textured look on her hair once using our dad’s old hair gel. We used way too much and she ended up looking like a wet seal for two days because it would not wash out. So definitely invest in a good quality, lightweight pomade or wax. Just a tiny little bit goes such a long way to give you that amazing definition without looking greasy.
Layered pixie hairstyle
If you have super thick Indigenous hair like I do, layers are basically going to be your best friend. A layered pixie hairstyle takes out all that heavy bulk and gives the hair some actual movement. Instead of just sitting like a helmet on your head, it flows and has volume at the roots.
This pin shows exactly how layers can soften a really short cut. It frames the face beautifully. You can easily tuck the longer front layers behind your ear for a sweet look or brush them forward to be a little more edgy. It is just super versatile for everyday wear.
Undercut pixie cut
Okay, we love a little bit of drama. An undercut pixie cut is for the bold girls. I love the contrast of having the sides buzzed super short while leaving the top long and floppy. It adds an instant edge to literally any outfit you wear.
I actually begged my mom to let me get an undercut when I was fourteen. She looked at me like I had lost my mind and flat out refused. Now that I am twenty-five and pay my own salon bills, I am seriously considering finally doing it. It just looks so liberating to shave off half your hair and feel the breeze on your neck.
Choppy pixie haircut
This is probably one of my top favorites right now. The choppy pixie haircut is deliberately uneven and a little bit rugged. It is not supposed to look perfect or perfectly symmetrical. The beauty is in the messiness of it all.
Imagine styling this choppy cut with a really oversized, vintage leather jacket and a cool barrel pants outfit for grabbing brunch on a Sunday. It creates such a strong fashion statement without looking like you tried too hard. It is messy chic at its absolute finest.
Tapered pixie haircut
A tapered pixie haircut is all about the shape at the back of the neck. It gradually fades from longer hair on top to a really close, clean cut at the nape. It looks so sharp and sophisticated. It is also one of my absolute favorite short natural haircuts because the fade emphasizes the natural curl pattern so beautifully.
This cut requires a bit more maintenance because you have to keep the neck clean, but it is so worth it. It gives you this very elegant, swan-like neck. You can throw on a delicate little gold necklace and it just pops so beautifully against the clean neckline.
Asymmetrical pixie hairstyle
This brings me right back to the early 2010s in the best way possible. An asymmetrical pixie hairstyle is longer on one side of the face and short on the other. It frames the jawline perfectly and is just incredibly flattering on almost everyone.
I have this funny story about an asymmetrical cut. A girl I knew in college got one and went on a blind date. The guy actually asked her if her hairstylist sneezed halfway through the haircut. She literally got up, paid for her own coffee, and walked out.
Feathered pixie cut
This is such a soft and romantic take on short hair. A feathered pixie cut uses razor cutting techniques to make the ends look light and airy. It is not harsh or blunt at all.
My auntie Sarah used to wear a feathered cut to every single family gathering and powwow we went to when I was growing up. She was honestly the most glamorous woman I knew.
Curly pixie haircut
If you have natural curls, please do not straighten them if you go short! A curly pixie haircut is just to die for. It is playful, cute, and shows off your natural texture in the best way. Short hair allows curls to spring up because they are not being weighed down by all that extra length.
I spent years frying my hair with a flat iron because I thought straight hair was the only way to look put together.
Slicked-back pixie hairstyle
Okay, this is for when you mean serious business. The slicked-back pixie hairstyle is giving major red carpet energy. It is intense, sleek, and fiercely confident. You just brush it all straight back with some high-shine gel.
This is exactly how I would style my hair for a really fancy dinner date or a formal event.
Messy pixie cut
I woke up like this, but make it fashion. A messy pixie cut is the absolute dream for lazy girls like me. You literally want it to look a little bit chaotic. The more ruffled and tousled it is, the better it looks.
This is the hair you want for running errands on a Saturday morning.
Side-swept pixie haircut
If you are super nervous about going short, this is the perfect gateway cut. A side-swept pixie haircut keeps a lot of length at the front to act almost like a long bang.
